Trivandrum (or Tiruvanathapuram) Capital of Kerala State is surrounded by numerous hills and hillocks on which stand buildings and parks. Trivandrum literally means the 'Holy city of Ananta' and is a city of magnificent buildings of ancient and modern architecture. The temple of Sri Padmanabhaswami is one of the most important shrines in the city dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu – his image reclining on Sheshnag, the enormous hooded serpent, Anant. Trivandrum was associated with King Solomon whose ships landed at a port called Ophir believed to be either at or close to the city. Traders have been coming to these parts from China, Arabia and Europe as far back as 190 AD, for spices, sandalwood and ivory. These incidentally still attract visitors who, upon leaving carry back vivid memories of a verdant land, azure seas and of course its beguilling backwaters.
